Preparing For Your Headshots
Headshot day can make even the most confident among us a little nervous. I’m going to make you feel relaxed and confident at your session but you can do some things in advance to ensure you love your photos. Make sure you end up with your favourite headshots ever by following my tips for getting ready and be totally prepared for your close up.
Do Some Self Care
When we feel good we look good so in the week leading up to your headshot treat yourself like the precious object that you are. Moisturize your skin, drink lots of water and get a few good nights sleep in a row. I promise that the care you’ve taken with yourself will show in your photos and you’ll be glad you did it. Plus you’ll feel amazing!
Clothes
I recommend wearing something that makes you feel great and fits properly. I like a solid colour with no logos or patterns because it's classic and will stand the test of time. Overly boxy, oversized or too small tops can be less flattering while a well-fitting collared top or jacket makes everyone look great. Higher quality materials do photograph better, so think silk or broadcloth over jersey. It’s ok to be overprepared so if you’re stuck between two or three shirts bring them all along and make it a game time decision based on how you’re feeling. An accessory is always fun but try to avoid anything too flashy or trendy.
Makeup
I like subtle makeup that enhances your natural beauty: concealer, light foundation, blush, contour, powder, a little liquid liner etc are all great. Adding some colour to the lips and cheeks is lovely but you don't want to overdo it or go too heavy on the eyes, again thinking timeless so your headshot doesn't go out of style too quickly.
Facial Hair
Facial hair should be recently trimmed and groomed, consider using beard oil the day or night before for an extra silky look. Clean shaven people should make sure to shave that day so their face looks fresh (not right before the session though, as it can irritate the skin).
Hair
A fresh haircut or blowout is always a good idea for your headshot. Fly-aways can be smoothed out in post if you’ve selected that option but you’ll be stuck with shaggy ends or flat greasy locks so make sure your hair is styled and looking the way you like it the day of your photos. Dry shampoo or hair oil are great things to pack depending on your hair.
Glasses
Blue light glasses and transition lenses don't photograph well but regular glare resistant eyewear is fine to keep on, just make sure to clean your lenses.
A Thorough Once Over
Everyone has their own taste and their own preferences for how they like to look so make sure to give yourself a good look before you step in front of the lens. Straighten your top, tie, glasses and anything else that might have gone askew. Touch up your lipstick and blot any shine off your face with a paper towel. Brush your teeth and make sure there isn’t anything stuck in places it shouldn’t be.
Relax!
Having your headshots done can feel stressful and you might be uncomfortable leading up to it, but I’m really good at making you feel relaxed and confident in front of the camera. I promise by the end of our session you’ll be having fun. I’m going to light you beautifully and capture your best angles which will make you feel great about how you look. We’ll start with some test shots and then I’ll show you how you’re looking on camera, give you some feedback about how to improve and we’ll keep going until we get it right.
